Use online dating to find love, not a free therapy session.
There are a lot of benefits to online dating: Meeting new people. Going on dates. Figuring out what you want in a partner. Killing time by clicking through thousands of profiles. But while internet dating can be fun, might get you laid, and can at least connect you with some interesting people, one thing it is decidedly not is a free therapy service.
And yet there are a whole lot of people online who seem to think that OkCupid is an appropriate venue to deal with their psychological and emotional issues. Confidential to all of them: Real therapy is awesome, and you should get it. Mental health problems are common and nothing to be ashamed about, but that doesn’t mean that anyone other than a paid, licensed professional should be obligated to deal with yours. What you definitely should not do is subject unsuspecting strangers to your psychoses.
Unfortunately, if the following messages are an indication, lots of people who could benefit from some professional help are instead turning to online dating sites to deal with their various problems. For example, sex addiction:
