Android users can take advantage of Google’s three major cloud productivity services (Gmail, Google Contacts, and Google Calendar) right out of the box, but setting them up on your iPhone requires a bit more work. There’s more than one way to do it, but if you integrate your apps with Google’s servers just right, you can take advantage of the company’s products and get better battery life than by using notorious iOS power-hog Exchange.


The trick is to combine Google’s new Gmail for iPhone app with two syncing protocols called CardDAV and CalDAV. Google’s new app supports many Gmail-specific features like threaded messaging that iOS users have long pined for, while CardDAV and CalDav sync the Contacts and Calendar apps...
